Figures 1–4.   Views of a chestnut tree in West Virginia.

Ms. Sara Fern Fitzsimmons (Tree Breeding Program Coordinator, The American Chestnut Foundation, personal communication, 2004) suggested that this tree is a Chinese Chestnut (or a hybrid with characters that are very close to that species).   It has shiny leaves, large leaf buds, and a branching structure and stem color that are characteristic of the Chinese Chestnut.   This tree grows well and produces many fruit annually, although nearby American Chestnut trees are greatly suffering from the Chestnut Blight.
