I found this larvae on the roof of my home. A day later it turned grayish, and then pupated. A few weeks later, a large brown ichneumon wasp with black wings (which killed the butterfly) exited from the chrysalis. The larva’s color change may of resulted from its parasitization. This butterfly is a common species in the Washington, D.C., Area.

It’s very unusual to see a “mud puddle convention” with both Tiger and Zebra Swallowtails in the Washington, D.C., Area. Both Warren Steiner and I had never seen such a mixed convention before in decades of arthropod observing. These male butterflies might have been obtaining salts from the soil. These are common species in the Washington, D.C., Area.
