At Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, I saw males perching on leaves in the shade and in sun patches, males chasing one another in a rapid circular flight near by the shore of the Potomac River, and a male chasing a Pearl Crescent.

Figures 1–2.   A perching male that sat motionless on leaves of Cornus amomum (Silky Dogwood) for minutes at a time, allowing me to photograph him with ease (June 2001).

Figures 3–4.   An older male with worn wings with missing parts resting on a leaf of Ampelopsis brevipedunculata (Porcelainberry), possibly due to a birds’ holding holding his wings with its beak (August 2001).
