This male Pearl Crescent has tattered wings, possibly due to a bird(s) that grasped his wings with its bill. As I photographed this butterfly, he sunned itself and opened and closed his wings. This is a common species in the Washington, D.C., Area.

Figure 1. A male Pearl Crescent apparently with a beak mark from a bird that might have been trying to eat this butterfly (29 October 2001). This is the first time that I saw such a mark on a butterfly.
