Nuhn Location: Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve plot 33 pitfall Additional Information: The ant Vollenhovia emeryi is native to Japan and has small brown adults (Japanese Ant Image Database, 2004). There are four records of this ant species in the U.S. as of October 2004. Record 1. Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C. (1986, Stefan Cover). Record 2. DMWP, Virginia (2002, Dan Kjar). Record 3. Fort Washington, Maryland (on the east side of the Potomac River only a few miles south of the DMWP (2002, Ted Suman). Record 4. Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. (September 2004, Dan Kjar). A pitfall trap next to the Ecology Lab obtained 10 specimens in 48 hours of trapping. This species may be more invasive in the Washington, D.C., Area, than researchers previously suspected. D. S.
